메탈리카 정규앨범 2집(Ride The Lightning)의 타이틀 곡이다.

원작은 그 유명한 Ernest Hemingway(노벨 문학상, 퓰리쳐상 수상 작가)의 소설이며, 영화로도 제작되었다.

1990년대에는 가히 스래쉬메탈(Thrash Metal)의 전성시대라 할만한데, 그 중에서도 메탈리카는 최고봉에 있었다.

 

'Ride The Lightning' 앨범에는 너무나 유명한 곡들이 많은데, For Whom The Bell Tolls 외에도 'Fade to black, Escape, Creeping Death 등'이 있다. 특히, Creeping Death는 1990년대 대학 밴드들의 커버곡으로 많이 연주되었다.

지금은 사회적 도전이나 기성세대들에 대한 반항 정신을 힙합(Hiphop)이란 장르가 대변하고 있지만, 힙합이 대중화 되기 이전까지는 헤비메탈(Heavy Metal)이 그 중심에 있었다.
